Alexandr Kargaltsev • Russia • USA

Alex Kargaltsav is a brilliant artist, writer, photographer, actor, and film director from Moscow, Russia. He entered the US on a film scholarship and became an immigrant through political asylum. As a gay artist, he uses his art to bring awareness to the brutality and the cynicism of the state his friends and family face to his former homeland, a passionate statement against oppression which is the daily bread of life.

In his work, Alex tries to show his viewer the world is a flow of fast-moving exquisite images captured by the press of a button; his subjects are beauty and movement, stasis and power, intimacy and love. His male nude subjects often appear lost and lonely, isolated from the rest of the world. He shot his subject so brilliantly; you can feel their pain and suffering thru isolation from their friends and families transported to an unfamiliar universe for the price of freedom.

Alex said that although he has been away from Russia for nearly six years, it still haunts his art: the brutality and the cynicism of the state and its rulers are a counterpoint in my work: a passionate statement against oppression which is the daily bread of life in his former homeland today.
